"Pygmalion" (2025) Oil on canvas. 54"x72"

Inspired by the old Greek/Roman story of Pygmalion and Galatea and reimagined for our contemporary. In this painting, Pygmalion (normally the best marble sculptor in Greece) is a female figure in a bedroom surrounded by digital images of idealized anime men. In the story, Pygmalion falls in love with a marble sculpture he carves of a woman-after forsaking real women-and then the sculpture comes to life.

This story is a rejection of the real for the fake/imagined/recreation. Subverting it to a female character allows me to change the piece to explore female desire and sexuality (desire being heavily relevant to this story and the medium of oil painting). I also am exploring our contemporary relationships to images, especially excessive, idealized, sexual representations of people.

This painting was exhibited at ATHICA as part of "Radical Imperfection" in 2025, where it won the juror's award.
