"Behind Closed Doors (Cocky)" (2026) Oil on canvas. 72"x84"

This painting confronts the viewer with their expectations of gender and sex roles. The female figure smiles at us knowingly, cocky while the male figure becomes a passive object. The history of gender, sex, and representation in painting has long made female figures passive objects of pleasure.

This piece also explores the way art from both history and pop culture enters into our lives. Even a private scene like this still takes place somewhere. The Dragonball and Van Gogh poster, Pikachu Squishmallow, and stacks of comics under the bed might all be found in the bedroom of a teenage guy. Or in this case, adults still living in their teenage bedroom because of the affordability crisis.
